Early Intervention Program

Who Qualifies:

• Children with permanent hearing loss, including:
  • mild to profound hearing loss
  • unilateral hearing losses
  • children with cochlear implants
  • children with complex/additional needs
• Children who have Deaf, Hard of Hearing, and DeafBlind parents
• Children between the ages of birth and 3 ½ who live in the Alberta Health Services Edmonton Zone
• While participating in the Early Intervention Program, families are eligible to access other community or hospital-based programs and services at the same time
• Consultation support is available to families outside the Edmonton Zone

Home Visits

• Information about hearing loss and child development
• Activity ideas to promote communication and learning
• Developmental screening
• Option for in-person or virtual visit

Play Groups

• Fun play time for babies and toddlers to learn and socialize
• Language experts and role models
• Chance to connect and share experiences with other parents

Connections

• Help coordinating with other professionals (like audiologists and therapists)
• Support at medical or audiology appointments
• Linkage to American Sign Language learning opportunities
• Information about Connect Society’s lending library and literacy programs
• Assistance with planning for preschool

Meet the Team

The Early Intervention Program team includes a certified Speech Language Pathologist with special training in signed language and a team of qualified Early Intervention Consultants who are knowledgeable about infant and toddler development and hearing loss.
